Once all the meal worms were gone it was time for the keepers to tidy up the mess!ĭepending on the animal, some might play with the presents whilst others will climb on them or completely destroy them! Regardless of how the animals respond to them, it provides them with something new to investigate. They buried their heads inside the gifts and were kept busy for a good thirty minutes. Within a few minutes they were using their claws to dig through the paper like an excited child on Christmas morning tearing open their presents. Our meerkats were sceptical at first but within a short time started sniffing these new festive additions to their enclosure. Providing our animals with gift wrapped presents will allow them to use their natural instincts to obtain the treats inside. We also encourage these natural behaviours here at the zoo, and so enrichment is a key part of looking after animals, ensuring they are stimulated and challenged each day.
Meerkats come from Southern Africa and in the wild they will spend hours foraging and digging through the sand to find food.

However, these weren’t just any ordinary Christmas crackers or presents – they were full of meal worms, one of their favourite snacks. Our meerkats were extremely lucky this week as they were the first animals to receive their very own presents and Christmas crackers made by our Education Team. Our team are so dedicated that on Christmas Day, whilst the zoo is closed to visitors, the animals will enjoy their usual routine with several receiving a wrapped present too as part of their enrichment programme. Stick the flamingo in a pot or rest against a solid surface and let the glitter dry.

Keep mod podging and glittering until the entire flamingo is covered. Apply a layer of Mod Podge on a section of the flamingo, sprinkle on the glitter, and then tap off the excess glitter. If you choose the second method, put down a drop cloth to catch all the glitter as we will reuse it.
If there isn’t enough and the pink is showing too much for your liking, then do another coat. It will take quite a bit of glitter in order to cover the flamingo solid. The second method is messier and you will probably have glitter around the house, but you will have a more glittery look once it is dry because theMod Podge won’t coat the glitter.įor the first method, pour Mod Podge into a disposable cup and mix in glitter until you get the amount you want. Mix the glitter in with the mod podge to create a glitter paint or paint the mod podge on the flamingo and then sprinkle glitter. To make this step a lot easier, we are keeping the legs on the flamingo. But you pick your fave or mix it up with all 3!įirst up is glittering.
I chose fine glitter for this DIY as I think it gives the best sparkle with the tree lights. There are few types of glitter: fine, regular and chunky. Who doesn’t want a glittering flamingo atop their tree? I actually made this for a coworker a few years ago and wanted one for myself. It’s less than 10 days till Christmas, are you ready? I’m still working on the finishing touches to my decor and it wouldn’t be a holiday without a flamingo appearance.
